Iceland! Another planet is surrounded by glaciers, mighty volcanoes, bubbling hot water springs, azure lakes and gigantic waterfalls. In our 7-day Iceland Volcano and Northern Lights Photo Tour, we will visit many hidden spots and untouched beauties of Iceland. We will head to the Reykjanes peninsula, where volcanic miracles occur, and the South Coast, where there are glittering waterfalls, active glaciers and black sand beaches that offer excellent and unique compositions. Then get ready! The paradise of photographers awaits you!
Having been to Iceland many times before, we prepared the ultimate itinerary to ensure that you are in the right place at the right time, based on the current weather conditions. We will move to areas with clear skies to increase our chances of seeing the Northern Lights during night sessions. September is statistically the best time to see the Northern Lights in terms of solar activity, so if weather permits, we will have Northern Lights tour every night.
Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall Volcano has been active again since August 2022, so if conditions allow, we’ll visit and photograph the Meradalir eruption. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you’ll be able to see an active volcano in all its glory from a safe distance. You can expect to see eruptions, lava fountains, lava rivers, and more. Every day is different at the volcano, and it offers multiple photography opportunities.
This is not just a photography workshop. It will also be an experience where we will closely witness the lives of Viking descendants, visit the amazing mountains at the first light of day, taste local food and experience many more surprises. Anyone at any level of photography can join. You can also accompany us just for a stroll and enjoy the beautiful views.
There is no fixed daily itinerary on this tour. We like to work with the weather as much as possible and visit locations based on the current weather conditions. We want to maximise our chances of going home with great images! The tour will start and end at Keflavik, Iceland (KEF). When looking at flights, please arrive no later than 3:30 PM on arrival day. If you need to travel the day before, please let us know, and we can collect you from your accommodation in the Reykjavik area.
DAY 1: Keflavik Airport & Selfoss
We will meet before 03:30 pm at Keflavik airport, an hour's drive from Reykjavik, Iceland's capital. We head to our hotel, with our comfortable vehicles waiting for us at the airport. After we settle into our hotel, we'll go out for dinner. After a nice dinner, we'll go to two exceptional locations where we'll take photos at sunset. Sunset time is around 9:00 pm, we'll have plenty of time ahead. After taking our photos, we go back to our hotel to rest.
DAY 2-6: South Coast & Reykjanes Peninsula
Over the next five days, the real adventure begins. We will spend five days on the South Coast and Reykjanes Peninsula and visit many beautiful places. We’ll travel along the south and west coast with our comfortable small van. We know Iceland very well, so we will adjust the itinerary according to the weather conditions. Among the places to visit will be:
Our first stops will be two of the country's most famous tourist destinations, the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls.
Then, we'll go to Dyrholaey on the south coast and photograph that incredible landscape, where the black sand beach contrasts with the white sparkling ocean waves, and then we'll continue to Reynisfjara.
Reynisfkara! This charming coastline was once among the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world. This is a great photo location for us. There will be strong waves on the Reynisfjara beach, so we will have the opportunity to take many beautiful pictures with telephoto lenses.
Our next location will be Fjaðrárgljúfur Valley, which became famous worldwide thanks to Justin Bieber’s music video. Then we will continue further east and photograph the fantastic beauty of the Jökulsárlón glacial lake, the Crown jewel of Iceland.
After a long journey to the east part of Iceland, we are coming back west part to visit the Geysir geothermal region. The most exciting Geyser here is Strokkur, which sprays its hot water every 5-10 minutes to 25-30 meters.
We will take a hike to Bruarfoss Waterfall, one of the most memorable waterfalls in Iceland.
The following day, we will drive to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. Our first photo location on the peninsula will be the beautiful black church of "Búdir", surrounded by wildflowers in the summer. We'll finish the day by taking Iceland's most iconic midnight sun shot: the setting sun behind the majestic Kirkjufell Mountain.
We will then return to the Reykjanes peninsula and spend the last three days of our Iceland photography tour. If we have a chance to visit the active volcano, we will do many sessions there. We will also go to many locations such as Lake Kleifarvatn and Reykjanesviti for aurora night sessions.
On the final evening, we’ll head out for our final meal together, where we can look back on our amazing week together.
DAY 7: Reykjavik, Keflavik Airport
Unhappily, this is your last day. If you have time before your flight, you'll have one last opportunity to see some urban landscapes in Reykjavík, Iceland's capital. Then you will return to Keflavík Airport and board your plane, taking your beautiful memories with you. Bye-bye!
